Dr. Robert N. Butler, president of the International Longevity Center in New York and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author on aging, has traveled to Cuba to see firsthand how doctors are trained. He said a principal reason that some health standards in Cuba approach the high American level is that the Cuban system emphasizes early intervention. conventional mainstream media story giving weak praise to the Cuban medical system and ignores how poorly the American medical system functions for the American population and at much greater cost. In the midst of Cuba's economic collapse, (hence medical tourism & the swap of doctors for Venezulean oil) it is remarkable that Cuba matches the US in health outcomes.

Some good research on Cuba, but precious little on the main subject of the film, which is the weaknesses of the American health system. It's as if the writer is put on the defensive to criticize Cuba's obviously anemic system so it won't look better. Seems rather petty and beside the point.

Everyone knows that Cuba has to have a better health care system than that of the US....after all, Michael Moore says so. The author of this NYT piece begs to differ.
