President Nicolas Sarkozy picks a surprising Socialist as foreign minister

The polished brass hats, shiny trumpets and 21-gun salute that marked the investiture of Nicolas Sarkozy as president in place of Jacques Chirac on May 16th were all part of the traditional ceremonial pomp at the Elysée. Yet the new President Sarkozy promptly set out to deliver his promised break with the past, flying to Berlin the same day. Two days later he was expected to pick a broad-based government.

Perhaps he only ran on fear and divisiveness in order to get the Front National vote. Interestingly, this is the exact opposite of the strategy of those in the White House today who ran on uniting, but spend their time dividing. Could have said more about the newly-created post of State Secretary of Sustainable Development for Juppe. Wish we had one of those. Perhaps with this new pro-American President, the U.S. might be able to start learning once again from France, even if a secretary of culture isn't likely forthcoming! Could have mentioned backstory that socialist Kouchner was recently criticized for allegedly spending Doctors Without Borders funds on a lavish lifestyle.
