Down the Memory Hole

Overnight, police snipers were stationed on the roof of their precinct, trying to protect it from gunmen roaming through the city, CNN's Chris Lawrence reported.

A ringing endorsement for the role of print it seems.

This story illustrated how CNN has changed the historical record of its reports. Using an incendiary frightening report from CNN during hurricane Katrina the author shows that CNN has re-written the story and posted it in its archives without any notation that the story has been corrected or edited.

The story is a little cryptic. What was the truth in the situation. Who filed the original story? Who changed the posting? Why? Where else have notable web postings been changed after the original posting? Rewriting of history is a serious problem. US history schoolbooks are notorious for their omittions. Interesting story. One can't ever count on web pages to *exist* forever, but I haven't heard before of such a major organization as CNN just re-writing history post facto. Worrying.
