(Blog Post) The USG Open Source Center translated remarks of Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, regarding Sunday's announcement by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that Iran would seek to enrich uranium to the 19.75% necessary to produce medical isotopes. Salehi represented the announcement as a way for Iran to put pressure on the West to provide the low enriched uranium for its medical reactor on Iran's terms. Full Story »

Another very fine comment by one of the best commentators in the US following events in Iran and the Middle East. I agree with Cole that the door is still open for a negotiated settlement, and that Bob Gates is scaremongering with talk about an Iranian nuclear weapons program.

Sadly, Hillary Clinton totally lacks a strategic sense, and Bob Gates is not much better. Iran would like to have normal relations with the US, and this would be in the best interests of both countries and the entire Middle East. Even if Israeli religious fanatics hoping to keep the entire West Bank might be unhappy.
