Not much in this story that's very scientific—most of it is just good speculation. Nothing wrong with that, but I would have liked to see a few points elaborated on, most importantly the researchers' method for defining "awe." Loses points for relevance because it centers on the Times.

I hope research like this will precipitate among news organizations an increase in deeper and longer analysis, investigation and feature. To be sure, if that ever happens it will be a response to "market forces" like the ones Tierney describes.

Cherry picks this single study, which is certainly interesting, but can't be said to represent online news media generally.

People preferred e-mailing articles with positive rather than negative themes, and they liked to send long articles on intellectually challenging topics. More »
