Enthusiasm for tax cuts dwindling as concerns for deficit grow

WASHINGTON -- Support for tax cuts -- a signature campaign issue for congressional Republicans -- is waning on Capitol Hill, with the GOP-led Congress reaching its Independence Day recess with no tax-trimming victories to tout in home districts.

Senate majority leader Bill Frist last week was forced to withdraw a measure to cut the estate tax, which foes derisively call the ``death tax," because there was not enough support for it.

This piece is more political analysis than straight news reporting but definitely points to interesting trends for the midterm elections. Well-sourced but presents too little new information in my view.

While the story cites Republican members of Congress who are backing away from tax cuts, much of the discussion around voter sentiment seems anecdotal -- neither backed by specific quotations or poll numbers. Furthermore, little or no ink is given to those lawmakers who DO back tax cuts, nor is their position explained. Some clarification as to the specific nature of the tax cuts and those they benefit would have given the article's topic -- the changing sentiment around tax cuts -- greater perspective.

While the story does not go to "the other side" it does present what seems to be a reasonable balance among Republicans and what is happending on their side of the aisle. The focus may exclude the big picture but still it seems to be good information of one part.
