Shelby Blocks All Obama Nominations In The Senate Over AL Earmarks

Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) has put an extraordinary "blanket hold" on at least 70 nominations President Obama has sent to the Senate, according to multiple reports this evening. The hold means no nominations can move forward unless Senate Democrats can secure a 60-member cloture vote to break it, or until Shelby lifts the hold. Full Story »

There's not much depth but this is an unbiased report on an action by Alabama Senator Shelby to hold up action on nominations until he gets what he wants.

One more sleazy blow to the effectiveness of Congress. But I guess of Ben Nelson can do it ...

An article about the sad state of the Senate. The updates are more informative than the original story. Shelby's confirmation of the article's accuracy really shot down Mitch McConnell's initial denial. Don't you love it when right-wingers fall all over themselves?

What the Hell happened to majority rule: the most good for the most people?

It reports a fact, and that's all. However it's an extremely interesting and sorry fact. The article offers no editorial comments of its own.

And people were complaining about the democrats 'buying' votes for the health care bill. There are often articles about how one senator or another puts a 'hold' on something. What no one seems to want to take on is why this is possible - why can one senator hold up crucial appointments even when a majority of others would agree to them.

That one Senator can rule the land and stop all Senate action must be stopped. The Senate Rules must be changed this is not the 1500's.
