Lieberman Will Petition

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman announced today he will petition for a place on the November ballot as an "independent Democrat," giving him a chance to stay alive politically should he lose an Aug. 8 primary for the Democratic nomination.

Every element of this brief report is well-managed and well-positioned, right from the attention-getting opening announcement to the sharp closing observation of Lieberman's character in action. The only missing tidbit an onlooker might have appreciated is a response from the Lamont campaign to this strategic move. The developing Lieberman-Lamont soap opera promises more diversion as the primary---just over a month away---grows closer. Stay tuned.

This article dispassionately reports on a bombshell development in Connecticut Democratic Party politics that, though many had suspected might occur, nonetheless reveals a perceived weakness of the Lieberman camp in that state. That Lieberman should take this move underscores the success of Lamont's "netroots" strategy.
