George Tenet cashes in on Iraq

While the swirl of publicity around his book has focused on his long debated role in allowing flawed intelligence to launch the war in Iraq, nobody is talking about his lucrative connection to that conflict ever since he resigned from the CIA in June 2004. In fact, Tenet has been earning substantial income by working for corporations that provide the U.S. government with technology, equipment and personnel used for the war in Iraq as well as the broader ... Very well documented and tells us things we ought to know. Still, relevance is not clearly established. Tenet is profiteering from a war he's now critical of, and didn't do enough to stop (not that he could have stopped it himself). Interesting, but not quite as interesting as it would be if he remained a full-throated supporter of the war.

A devastating portrait of how former CIA director George Tenet has enriched himself since leaving office -- and the country in a terrible situation in Iraq, not coincidentally.

Good on evidence, but some sources are undeclared. Yet it is clear the author did a lot of digging (small d). The laundry list is here, and there is a lot of information. But no totals and no comparison to other people in similar positions.

This article shows that Tenet is following the time honored (that doesn't make it right) tradition of cashing in on government service. I remember reading 45 years ago that you've got to be a "dollar a year man" to really make the big bucks.

Good digging beyond the press interviews by Tenet. Should there not be an ethical window between government employment and related corporate employment, such as there is supposed to be for military officers?

Salon's editors are typically scrupulous about accuracy and detail and this story does not disappoint. Shorrock provides damning details about George Tenet's ability to parlay his experience and connections from a high level governmental post to a successful series of stints with private industry while wildly enriching himself and influencing global policy/action in the process. While a common practice in the field of Public Administration (with some protections in place to prohibit it), the potential for conflicts of interest are rampant and often exploited.

The article relates some very troubling facts about the outsourcing of the national security intelligence : a very disgusting situation because of the priority for greed versus efficiency that it risks to involve, and a terrible danger for the American democracy.

I'd love to hear what other Bush administration officials are war profiteering. One hears Cheney has some stock options...
