There's nothing wrong with costcutting, and in any dynamic economy layoffs will be necessary. A financial consultant I once did work for was fond of quoting Warren Buffett on this very topic, saying, "You can't dig your way out of a hole." The point is that companies often cut the very employees, such as research staff, who could speed growth and/or recovery. Glad to see the point of view is getting some mainstream press.
