A financial consultant I once did work for was fond of quoting Warren Buffett on this very topic, saying, "You can't dig your way out of a hole." The point is that companies often cut the very employees, such as research staff, who could speed growth and/or recovery. Glad to see the point of view is getting some mainstream press.

It is good journalism because it presents a new perspective that changes some notions about the effects of layoffs on profits. It is extremely good news that, if it is absorbed by corporate America could have an excellent effect on the overall employment picture.
