I find it ironic that a opinion piece about the failings of science education in this country would contain little-to-no factual evidence to back up its claims. The author is undoubtedly highlighting an important issue, but has approached it making bold accusations that don't necessarily hold water. For instance, I think his correlation between Bush's stance on stem cell research and a declining public faith in science is specious. Public attitudes about something so broad are not going to be entirely, or even substantially shaped by the positions of any one person, even if that person is the President.
