This is one of David Brooks’ best commentaries. Historically these Republicans are very close to the Do Nothing Republicans from 1890 to 1902.

Brooks uncharactaristically characterizes the Repugnantcons correctly, but fails to criticize the drastic budget cuts drastic effect upon the struggling economic recovery from the republican induced economic collapse and depression, and their drunken sailor unfunded spending under Bush for his two wars, and their tax cuts for the wealthy. Where was Brooks then? Better late than never?

This opinion piece is amazing. You have to give the author high marks for originality! But that's all that he gets credit for. The piece shows total ignorance of the budget situation. The Republican House has passed a budget for 2012, with a plan for long-term deficit reduction. The Democratic Senate has not passed any budget at all. They did reject President Obama's budget 0 to 97, and he has not come up with any alternative. The Democrats have nothing whatsoever on the table for the Republicans to respond to. They appear to be hoping to ram through a last-minute secret deal without the public having any chance to learn about it, and the Republicans are opposing this strategy as fundamentally undemocratic.
