Reports on basic research are normally good news, it does take years for it to make it to the application stage. For every 100 breakthroughs promised by research maybe one will bear fruit, but that does not deminish the value.

We should not forget that we are still in the very unmature stages of computer design, In the early days it was imagined that there would only be 4 or 5 very large computers in the world, but we would all be connected by phone lines to every home and business.
