Banks, battles, and the psychology of overconfidence.

Since the beginning of the financial crisis, there have been two principal explanations for why so many banks made such disastrous decisions. The first is structural. Regulators did not regulate. Institutions failed to function as they should. Rules and guidelines were either inadequate or ignored. Fascinating article on the psychology of overconfidence by Malcom Gladwell (author of 'Outliers,' 'Blink' and 'The Tipping Point'). The author asks why so many banks made such disastrous decisions in the recent financial crisis. He compares this phenomenon to the disaster at Gallipoli and the psychology of card games, leading him to suggest that a failure to adapt and re-consider one's biases may be at the root of this problem. Another brilliant perspective on what makes us tick.

Very good writeup by Malcolm Gladwell on the collapse of Bear Stearns in relation to its CEO. Has a bias towards blaming him for the bank's collapse. The article is weak on the actual facts surrounding the bank's collapse and just how much the CEO had to do with it.

When I saw that Malcolm Gladwell was the author, I knew it would be well written and thoughtful. It was an easy and interesting read that makes sense to understand what happened to Bear Stearns.

This is a brilliant article about the fall of Jimmy Cayne and Bear Sterns. By reading it, one learns much about how this crisis happened, and the egos and really stupid justifications involved.
