On rebuilding Haiti

The night after the earthquake, Haitians who had lost their homes, or who feared that their houses might collapse, slept outdoors, in the streets and parks of Port-au-Prince. Insightful perspective about the tragedy in Haiti, and the failure of its government to rise to the occasion. The author suggests that other nations have a responsibility to go beyond emergency relief -- and devote long-term resources to help build a functional Haitian state that is not ruled by corrupt political and business elites.

To patch up a dying country and call it a rescue would leave Haiti forsaken indeed, and not by God. More »

A vacuous piece with little insightful information. Given the author's position as staff political reporter for the New Yorker some background on US near continuous involvement in Haitian crises would be expected.
