A very well-researched story on the disparities of vacations and economies between the U.S. and other developed countries. The links to the papers and studies show very clearly the differences, and are easy to interpret, even for a layperson. The article also makes relevant points beyond the numbers, such as our own happiness measurements associated with work, and the risks of unemployment.

I am reminded of this saying, "No one will ever tell you to work less." Maybe they would, in Sweden or France. Many people in my generation are working less and finding alternative work styles (and yes, some are doing it by choice, some are not) - I wonder if there will be another chance for a mandatory vacation for workers in upcoming decades.

The article hones in on a major difference in core values between most Europeans and Americans. Time spent with family, time to explore other cultures and broaden one's perspective, mental and physical health can all be related to vacation time.

...and Americans are being told by folks cruising on their yachts that they have to work harder and longer when it's difficult for many to even find employment!
