The Dark Side

After 9/11, Vice President Richard Cheney seized the initiative. He pushed to expand executive power, transform America's intelligence agencies and bring the war on terror to Iraq. But first he had to take on George Tenet's CIA for control over intelligence. Full Story »

An outstanding documentary on Cheney's role in the war on terror, directed by Michael Kirk and reported by Jim Gilmore. Thorough, well-documented, dramatic and insightful. Public television at its finest.

PBS Frontline examines Cheney's place in recent history. Very well sourced, with a strong historical context. The TV program (available online on 6/22 at 5 PM et) is Frontline at its best, and the website provides lots of background.

Presented without overt editorializing, which is left to the many interviewees; couldn't cover the entire range of viewpoints because of some key refusals to participate, but still seemed fair because of the good documentation and contextualization. Solid "expose" type of program focused on bureaucratic infighting; avoids deeper levels of policy issues and ultimate goals.

The first level-headed look that I've seen at Dick Cheney's influence and impact in the current administration. Also the first convincing explanation of how George Tenet made the extremely unlikely transition from the Clinton administration to the Bush administration in the position once occupied by Bush's father. The net effect of the program is disturbing, to say the least, but the human side of both men is brought out very well. Far from vilifying anyone, "The Dark Side" almost makes Tenet a sympathetic character in the unfolding drama. Certainly his personal conflicts are easy to understand. Since neither Cheney nor Tenet was willing to be interviewed, that achievement is particularly significant.
