Chernobyl: The Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment

"The tragic news uncovered by the comprehensive new research that almost one million people died in the toxic aftermath of Chernobyl should be a wake-up call to people all over the world to petition their governments to put a halt to the current industry-driven "nuclear renaissance.' Aided by a corrupt IAEA, the world has been subjected to a massive cover-up and deception about the true damages caused by Chernobyl." Full Story »

While full access to this report requires that one join the New York Academy of Sciences (minimum cost $108 for a one-year membership) this synopsis and the accompanying review provide much of the basic information contained in the full report. My only criticism might be the lack of information regarding the methodology the researchers used in preparing the original Russian-language report, "Chernobyl." This methodology is discussed in some detail in the English translation prepared by the New York Academy of Sciences.

It will never be possible to fully quantify the tragic consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. This is the first concerted attempt to do so, based on thousands of titles previously available only in their original Slavic language editions. Residents of North America, who might imagine themselves at a comfortable remove from the Chenobyl disaster, will be surprised to learn that the authors attribute 170,000 North American deaths to radioactive fallout from Chernobyl.

This is not a news story. It is a reprint of an opinion piece published some time ago, that is an attack on science with basis in fact. The authors of the study were unfamiliar with radiation biology and thus make some wild claims about deaths from Chernobyl that are not supported by actual data. The write-up available to NewsTrust is by a professor of journalism.
