This story gives a short summary of an academic paper which explains why a single average temperature value is not a useful metric for measuring global warming. Includes "warmer during the recent 50 years" context which is not in the paper, and no source given. Likewise "defined only for a homogeneous system" does not come from the paper. What the paper does say is similar, that "an average of temperature data sampled from a non-equilibrium field is not a temperature". Single viewpoint.
