To Confirm or Not to Confirm

The Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to replace Justice David Souter must be respectful and thorough and must focus on whether she is qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. A dishonest piece. Hatch spends more time complaining about the method by which Democrats defend Sotomayor than he does raising legitimate criticisms about her qualifications. When he finally gets around to it, his main argument is contradictory (see quotes). Not recommended.

Republican Senator Orin Hatch shares his views on how to assess Judge Sotomayor's qualifications for the Supreme Court. He makes several observations to suggest that she may not be as qualified as Democrats claim, pointing to actions she took on a couple cases related to the Second Amendment. But some of his observations seem partisan in nature and intended to paint the nominee in a negative light: for example, he states that Sotomayor questioned whether judges should try to transcend personal sympathies and prejudices -- an undocumented assertion that seems like a stretch for this reputable candidate.
