The headline inflames the issue as the total death of officers is down.

There has been good use of training and armor that has reduced the death of law enforcement officers. Even though the number of same time deaths is up.

This decade, the statistics have varied widely. The 2008 numbers, for instance, marked a dramatic reversal from 2007 when 182 officers were killed, 68 by gunfire.

It is indeed good news that the overall numbers are down.
