The Bush administration's assault on some of the founding principles of American democracy marches onward despite the Democratic victory in the 2006 elections. The new Democratic majorities in Congress can block the sort of noxious measures that the Republican majority rubber-stamped. But preventing new assaults on civil liberties is not nearly enough.... This is a persuasive editorial arguing that Congress must roll back many of the restrictions on liberty imposed either by law or fiat in the name of fighting terrorism. While some of the claimed excesses such as the overuse of classification are assertions absent much supporting evidence, most are clear cut violations of basic human rights or international law. This is excellent journalism.
