The Central Intelligence Agency withheld information about a secret counterterrorism program from Congress for eight years on direct orders from former Vice President Dick Cheney, the agency’s director, Leon E. Panetta, has told the Senate and House intelligence committees, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said Saturday. Full Story »

There's a bit of sensationalism here in that the Dems and the CIA agree that this program needed to be shut down and that it never went "operational." However, the story is a good scoop for the Times.

Gotta figure stuff like this would happen. Cheney was a slime-ball, only figures that stuff is just coming to light.

“Because this program never went fully operational and hadn’t been briefed as Panetta thought it should have been, his decision to kill it was neither difficult nor ... More »

Good story that leaves you wanting more information. Too many unnamed sources, though I understand why so few people with knowledge of the CIA's program were willing to speak on the record. I have a feeling the story could have used one more day of reporting to get more information, including a comment from someone in the Bush administration, but that the NYT wanted it in the Sunday Times. I also think that it would have been appropriate to connect the dots and reference Seymour Hershe's reporting earlier this year about a secret CIA operated assassination ring, as it seems to be quite relevant to the story. If Hersh beat the Times to the story by a few months, credit is due.

It is small wonder that Cheney et al were willing to allow the water torture to remain front and center since it appears they hoped their far more egegious actions would remain forever buried.

What the hell is going on with all the news about the abuses being released on Freday and Saturday.

The story tells us what the program isn't, but investigative reporting was not done that told us what it is that the program did.

Sounds like it could be the executive assassination ring that Seymour Hersh reported in March. Whatever it is, secret government by an anti-democratic mafia is shameful and dangerous.

Big news for the weekend. Many aspects will continue to fall out in the weeks to follow.

This is huge and it is interesting that Chaney is not around for comment. This calls for both Congressional and a Special Prosecutor to be activated soonest. That said I do fully support the President's need for Executive Actions and Congress should take no actions to rein them in. This is the case of a bad apple, Chaney and company should be the ones to pay- not this or future President'a and the CIA. I feel the Gang of Eight was not used and it the correct way to go forward.

Members of Congress have differed on the significance of the program, whose details remain secret. Most of those interviewed, however, have said that it was an important ... More »

A good filling in of the details for those that are following this story and the Cheney saga.

They got the Mafia for tax evasion. Perhaps they will get Cheney for keeping Congress in the dark.
