U.S. hardens line on talks between Jerusalem, Damascus

The United States demanded that Israel desist from even exploratory contacts with Syria, of the sort that would test whether Damascus is serious in its declared intentions to hold peace talks with Israel.

In meetings with Israeli officials recently, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was forceful in expressing Washington's view on the matter.

After quoting Rice, this story goes on to a litany of unattributed statements and reports from secret meetings. It may well be accurate, but as no public figure has staked his or her reputation except Rice, itis difficult to call it compelling. As this is the semi-official newspaper of the Israeli government, we can probably believe the information but it is not good journalism. However, I was glad to hear about the apple crop.
