A good roundup of the results of a survey. If you believe the survey, you'll believe the reporting. I would have preferred that the article go beyond the survey...but it didn't.

I have to concur with Rory on this one. Good reporting on the survey but doesn't provide independent context or seek sources outside of the survey results, which I find a major weakness. Yes, it's a story that needs to be toll but more solid, original reporting, as well as sourcing other views of the survey findings themselves would have been better journalism.

The poll identifies a few most important pieces of the complex puzzle American black community is today, community which seems to revolve around a polarized duality, expressed at many levels. Shadows of the past white domination vs. present discrimination (as civil status, access to opportunities and so on); segregated self image (good black vs. bad black aspects); the side effects of the "gangsta culture" (an image of the black delinquent, both inherited and still propagated through media, that today shames a part of the black population and lure another part of it, a part that socially follows and reproduces delinquent values); outer vs. inner black group violence; social, professional, educational and financial progress for a ... This is the first in a year-long periodic series on Black Men in America. The primary source is a survey of 2864 people, including 1328 black men. The authors present the poll in a narrative that includes quotes from some of the participants. A well written article.

The information gathered in this survey is interesting, but it would have been more beneficial to ask experts in fields of African American Studies, Psychology, Sociology, etc. to speak on the issues presented in this article as well as interpreting the survey results.
