Ike was right all along: The danger of the military-industrial complex

Fifty years ago, President Eisenhower warned of the danger of the 'military-industrial complex'. The huge budget and reach of America's modern defence industry has proved him correct, says Rupert Cornwell

If you doubt, half a century on, that Dwight Eisenhower had it right, then consider the advertisements on WTOP, the Washington region's all-news radio station. Every big metro area in the US has one, where car dealerships tout their bargains, and fast food chains promote a new special offer. Full Story »

This is an excellent story about one of the best speeches in the last century. It is interesting that this good journalism comes from Great Brittan.

This piece represents excellent, insightful, well-researched journalism. I'll be interested to see if any or our congressional bright lights pick up this torch. I won't, however, be holding my breath...

The words in this piece, as were Ike's words in 1961, are for those who have ears to hear. No one was listening then, and for sure anyone who's listening now and speaks out will be either ignored, silenced by the special interests, or both. Chalmers Johnson's books (BLOWBACK, SORROWS OF EMPIRE, NEMESIS) recall Eisenhower's warnings -- in spades -- but I doubt that anyone who can do anything about reining in the military-industrial-CONGRESSIONAL complex has read them, much less ... I agree with the author Rupert Cornwell but as someone who listened to the orignal speech I do take exception with the portrayal of the times. Cornwell is right on about how beholden the US Congress is to MIC and many other special interests for that matter. It is too bad that Ike warned us but never really did do anything while in office nor did any of the following presidents who only increased the spending and if the US does not use the products themselves thay make a terrific ... Yes, the US squanders many hundreds of billions of dollars every year on "defense" spending, thanks to the military-industrial-Congressional complex. I agree with the writer that Eisenhower would not have been so stupid as to invade Iraq in 2003. And that the war was not brought on by the armaments manufacturers. The war was brought to the American people by the Israel lobby.

Ironically, the US accelerates its decline by squandering trillions of dollars on unnecessary or useless weapons. And ill-conceived military adventures in the greater Middle East.

This article does a tremendous job informing people with information. Not only are they presented with text, the multimedia of the article also gives links to other articles related to the specific subject matter. Citing a historical political figure does wonders for readers who may be naive or apathetic to the current situation of this nation's government. Through making "Ike" the main subject of the article, readers can relate current information that may otherwise seem boring to a great leader of America. Again, this information is delivered on-demand through online text so millions can access the information at any given time. Thornburg also stresses on "Why" the particular article is significant. This question is ... More »
