Habitat built it, no one wants it

ST. PETERSBURG - The house is neat and new, with three bedrooms, white concrete walls and a pretty lawn. And no family searching for a deal could ask for a more generous seller: Habitat for Humanity.

Actually, I like the story, as it does one of the classic things journalism is supposed to do: afflict the comfortable, and comfort the afflicted. It rightly shows that even a good deed can be undermined by other circumstances. It would be even better if the paper followed up on this, and looked at the decision-making process for building Habitat for Humanity Houses. Until this article, I was unaware that the poor were assuming mortgages on these homes; I was under the impression that the homes were given free. Thus, it seems somebody, probably the banks, seem to be making money from a non-profit enterprise. This looks absolutely ripe for a follow-up series. Donors to Habitat for Humanity may be under the impression that the homes are given away---forcing loans may dry up some funds for HFH. Totally aside from the story, I have heard that Home Depot, which used to fund many Eagle Scout Projects, is not running all its requests for donations through the Home Depot Foundation at Headquarters, and they are now funding ONLY projects built through Habitat for Humanity. Thus, there's more to follow up, and I'm not seeing much of a promise of that happening in this one article.
