With the Taliban resurgent, reconstruction faltering, and opium poppy cultivation at an all-time high, Afghanistan is at risk of collapsing into chaos. This is a policy report in a policy magazine. It is long and detailed and discusses information generally known but rarely reported or discussed. This is a good example of the capabilities of journals to provide more in depth and thoughtful material.

The kicker is when Rubin says "U.S. policymakers have misjudged Afghanistan, misjudged Pakistan, and, most of all, misjudged their own capacity to carry out major strategic change on the cheap." Though the historical background is good, Rubin doesn't point with nearly enough force that the lack of commitment is what is sinking Afghanistan.
