Climate change: this is the worst scientific scandal of our generation

What we are looking at here is the small group of scientists who have for years been more influential in driving the worldwide alarm over global warming than any others, not least through the role they play at the heart of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)....(T)he leaked documents...show the scientists trying to manipulate data through their tortuous computer programmes, always to point in only the one desired direction – to ... While the arguments are compelling, they conflate problems with one set of studies with that of an entire discipline and with the work of all climate change scientists. Even as much as the behavior of this group of scientists is reprehensible and casts doubts on the integrity of their work, that doesn't lead to the muddying of the work of every climate scientist out there today. Even if the "hockeystick" is a fabrication, there is no evidence presented that this graph / dataset fundamentally compromises every other dataset and every other study that exists out there. The school of argument that tries to debunk global warming / climate change on the basis of this incident rests on the premise that all other studies and ... More »

This editorial demonstrates why "Climategate" cannot simply be dismissed as an irresponsible attempt by conservatives to derail "cap-and-trade" and other legislation intended to limit carbon emissions. Christopher Booker demonstrates that the scientists in question are at the very center of promoting the anthropogenic theory of global warming--specifically Professor Philip Jones, the Director of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and key associates and colleagues Michael Mann, Keith Briffa, Ben Santer, Kevin Trenberth, and Gavin Schmidt. The leaked documents show a clear pattern of deception, advising scientists criminally to delete data sought under freedom of information requests. Perhaps ... More »

I first joined the Sierra Club at age twelve and have been a lifelong environmentalist. I support conservation efforts and all attempts to limit and reduce carbon emissions that will not compromise populations that depend on modern industry and food production for their survival. I very much admire hybrid technologies (the Toyota Prius and Ford Fusion are particular favorites), and I support all efforts at transitioning to green energy sources that will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
