More Than 800 Injured As Chinese Muslims, Han Majority Clash in Xinjiang Region; Protests Reportedly Spread to Second City

The official Xinhua News Agency did not immediately give any other details in its one-sentence report early Tuesday.

It had said earlier that at least 140 people were dead and that the number "was still climbing." Another 828 people were reported injured in the deadliest ethnic unrest to hit the region in decades.

Informative piece of breaking news with substantial background information on the continuing conflict between Han Chinese and Uighurs.

Given the upheaval about release of Uighur detainees from Guantanamo, this piece provides useful context, even though there is no indication of a connection between the individuals held and any violent activities.

China seems to limit press coverage of internal disputes. This story claiming 156 dead and 828 injured seems to be too big to keep quiet. Appropriate breadth and depth for a breaking news story.
