While reporting on rumors gives the rumor legs, it also provides cover to all those involved.

The legal threats by Palin are nothing new, and given their unlikely sustainability, I would think there may be more than just smoke, Her history has been attack, attack, attack and ignore the facts. Resigning doesn't really fit in her public character.
