Let us assume for a moment that the Palestinians accept all of Netanyahu's conditions - their state will be demilitarized, it will have no effective control of its external borders, its airspace, seaport, electromagnetic sphere. This story should be read with Tony Judt's comments on the illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank that appeared in The New York Tmes yesterday. Netanyahu has no intention whatever of allowing an independent Palestine, and he will assist those who continue to steal Palestinian land and water, and civil rights, for as long as he is able.

Israel seems determined to destroy itself, and the fault lies in part with millions of "supporters" of Israel in the US who have aided and abetted 41 years of oppression of the Palestinians. Obama needs to tell Netanyahu Israel must get out of the West Bank and the Golan Heights, fully rather than partially. Or end up in a permanent state of civil war.
