It is a major contribution in the debate about Iran, and Anne Applebaum's arguments are convincing. I consider this high quality journalism.

Anne Applebaum rightly points to one of the main factors in the Iran conflict: The place of women in Iran's society. Can gender equality be reached in a Islamic society where men decide and women are supposed to obey them? Must women accept that men demand in the name of God that one has to follow their rules? Must they believe that it is really God's will that is imposed on them? The answer bears on the compatibility of Christianity with its values and Islam with its strict laws: If there is only one God, he cannot be happy about both Christian gender equality and Islamic denial of equal rights and freedom to women.
