The Beginning of the End of Private Health Insurance

Sadly, we are already well on our way to a wholly government-run health insurance system. After fall, about 47 percent of all health care expenses today are paid for by federal, state, and local governments, e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, and State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). A good overview of the probable results associated with the creation of a public health insurance option, especially one that mandates severe limits in compensation to health care providers. What is not addressed in this article is perhaps the most important factor in evaluating the efficacy of any national health care system--who is the gatekeeper to health care services? Currently the gatekeepers are government bureaucrats and watchdogs for the private insurance companies; the best national health care systems, by contrast, invest the gatekeeper function in medical practitioners themselves.
