I wasn't aware of these airport subsidies, but this article did an excellent job of showing how wide spread this practice is in Congress, on both sides of the aisle.

The story provides some insight to the motivations for pork barrel spending. The focus on airports, however, neglects huge government subsidies for highways and trains, and neglects to mention the taxes upon light aircraft usage that help pay for the airport subsidies.
