An interesting change of focus that might just be correct--not Roe v. Wade, but instead affirmative action. The article says that race-based affirmative action is "reliably unpopular," but it's not just unpopular--it has been widely discredited as racist, and several states, including California, have outlawed it. Author Christopher Caldwell says that Rush LImbaugh represents opposition to "racial-preference programs," while President Obama supports them--well, no, I hope not. The most visible, and eloquent, opponent of race-based affirmative action is Ward Connerly, a black man who has fought it for decades. Sonia Sotomayor may not be a racist, but the statement she made in her 2001 essay, and which was delivered as a speech at U.C. Berkeley ,was certainly both racist and sexist--"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
