Posted by Mark MayhewWhile this article does point out an important omission from the SOTU, it fails to put this omission in any context, or provide any perspective that could explain the omission authoritatively (and administration spokesman, for instance).
I like how this illustrates one aspect of the "State of the Union" that apparently continues to be neglected. Aside of a few key officials, this disaster seems to be forgotten despite continued suffering.
This story lacks the balance of a reaction from the Administration, but that is the point now isn't it? The President avoided the topic, and the administration has left a major American city in the lurch for far too long after a disaster, so it seems completely fair to point that out. This was a major omission from the president's speech tonight.
This is an odd, single issue story. The thrust is that New Orleans recovery was not mentioned by Bush in his State of the Union speech and is an issue he has largely ignored. That can be said of many important issues. Perhaps the reason to single this issue out is that it is one that was mentioned by Webb in his Democratic response.
Bush not mentioning N.O is not surprising! What I'm surprised about is that he and his administration can get away with anything without being challenged by the main stream media.
N.O. is very much a State of the Union issue. Why was it not addressed? Too local, or too embarassing? The "big issue" is how the administration perceives poverty at home. If ther was a way to blame it on terrorism, it would have been mentioned. Has any newly elected official taken up the cause to "reconstruct america"?
The story does point out how difficult life remains for NO residents and the need for this president to do more. The fact that no mention of Katrina was made in his SOTU address reaffirms the fact that his administration, to a large extent, lacks the compassion and desire to help a city of great cultural, artistic and historical importance. Shame on him and the administration!
