Robert M. Smith, a former Times reporter, says that two months after the burglary, over lunch at a Washington restaurant, the acting director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, L. Patrick Gray, disclosed explosive aspects of the case, including the culpability of the former attorney general, John Mitchell, and hinted at White House involvement.

This is the NYT self-reporting on it's own failure to get the biggest story of the century – wow.

Amazing – the top 2 FBI officials were leaking info. Seems like the Hoover men didn't much like Nixon? Or, maybe, the whole administration was so corrupt, they didn't realize it was wrong until it was too late? Either way, this is an incredible story.

If his and Mr. Smith’s accounts are correct, The Times missed a chance to get the jump on the greatest story in a generation. More »

An article that was written to sell books more than to correct history.

I picture him seeing Woodward and Bernstein and having a "I could have had a V8" moment.

This story is reported as "inside journalism"--- the New York Times' loss of a scoop. But there was a far far more important story--- Senator McGovern was patronized by the press in 1972 when he brought up the Watergate break in. Would the outcome of the 1972 election have been any different had the Times done its job and reported the story? Well, about 6 months after the election, after the Washington Post story came out, a poll indicated that a majority of voters would have voted for McGovern instead. This is an important story, fitting with the more recent failure of the press during the run up to the Iraq war, and the obsession with what Pelosi may or may not have known vs. the story that Cheney may have ordered ... It's somewhat interesting to know that the Watergate events were being leaked to more than one person and by more than one person. This would have been an interesting story decades ago.
