First - I enjoyed this piece - but as to it being quality journalism, I fear that this prose was butchered at editing in order to fit in the space. The premise seemed more of a disclaimer to The New Yorker readers that perhaps in the battle of fact and fiction - fact is beginning to struggle to its feet and once again, out of the shadows.

In general, humanity seems to be phototropic and thus most of our best development requires light. The mindset of the previous administration, most unfortunately, was to operate in darkness under the guise of "National Security" - thus thrusting Americans into the 60's cold-war mentality. While it is very good for crowd control - it is debilitating to humanity. In the world's eyes the US has come inconceivably close to the Dark Ages, with a side trip to the 1400's and our best efforts to replicate the Spanish Inquisition and the fine work of Tomas de Torquemada. I expect to see more of this type of comment as the Press, in a period of adjustment, finds its voice and once again distinguishes itself from commentary.
