First - I enjoyed this piece - but as to it being quality journalism, I fear that this prose was butchered at editing in order to fit in the space. The premise seemed more of a disclaimer to The New Yorker readers that perhaps in the battle of fact and fiction - fact is beginning to struggle to its feet and once again, out of the shadows.

In general, humanity seems to be phototropic and thus most of our best development requires light. The mindset of the previous administration, most unfortunately, was to operate in darkness under the guise of "National Security" - thus thrusting Americans into the 60's cold-war mentality.
