Bats: The New Canary In The Coal Mine?

(Blog Post) At least 1 million bats in the past three years have been wiped out by a puzzling, widespread disease dubbed "white-nose syndrome" in what preeminent US scientists are calling the most precipitous decline of North American wildlife in human history. this is an important story which isn't getting the coverage it should based upon its impact on the environment and the economy. this article doesn't really do it justice. i'd like to read more sources here, more information, more specifics about what it will mean, and more about the possibilities of what has caused the rapid spread of the fungus among bats.

we had seen the results of this decline here in central virginia, without knowing why until a few months ago when it wasdicsussed on npr.
