U.S. Signals Willingness to Reopen Talks With Cuba

In a new gesture toward Cuba, the Obama administration signaled willingness on Friday to reopen a channel with Havana that was closed under President George W. Bush by scheduling high-level meetings on migration between the two countries.

The move comes as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is trying to fend off pressure from her Latin American counterparts to take an even bolder step by endorsing a proposal that would reintegrate Cuba into ... Full Story »

A straightforward news report that would have been better contextualized with more sources outside the government.

This is a well written article that quite responsibly packed a lot of information into a quick read. The writing was superb and the use of quotes was effective and logical. Ms. Thompson clearly navigated the reader through the path of ostensibly conflicting information to a point of understanding the rationale of the complex debate. Not only is it a complex debate involving OAS and its perception in Cuba - but the political ramifications to US legislators with skin in opposing games. The article delivered on its title and very skillfully.

There are not simple opposing arguments about this subject - but rather a faceted landscape with opposition occurring on an number of planes. I'm very proud the US is making gestures to minimize the divide and forge new tools in order to do it.

The author explains what the current Administration is doing to relax sanctions with Cuba. While well written, it has no dog in this fight. They should at least have an opinion, one way or the other.

We do business with China. Russia. Saudi Arabia, and a host of other counties that make Cuba sound like a democratic nation. Why? Because as usual, politics and elections. This is just stupid foreign policy.

Good report, highlighting US childishness in trying to keep Cuba isolated as if it had an infectious disease. Many countries in the OAS are pushing for Cuban reintegration into the Hemisphere.

US should emulate the UK and have normal relations with Cuba and dump into the rubbish bin the childish and counter-productive scheme employed for so many years.
