Posted by Derek HawkinsA fairly short story, well written with good sources, but light on factual evidence. It seems the author didn't even seek out any independent stats on the number of child laborers in Pakistan. I had to look up Pakistan's population to decide whether I thought the 10 million figure was believable.
This is a prime example of a subject that gets surfaced, gets everyone all 'het up' - and then sinks out of sight again. At least there is reference to the 1990s , which, if I remember correctly, had an 11 year old worker as a spokesperson (I think he became world famous and then was apparently murdered). Maybe the article doesn't have great verifiable statistics - but are any statistics on this totally reliable? And there's no indication of who runs and/or contracts with places employing children? Wal Mart? Is that soccer ball factory still in business?
