New York Assembly Passes Gay Marriage Bill

The State Assembly approved legislation on Tuesday night that would make New York the sixth state to allow same-sex marriage — a pivotal vote that shifts the debate to the State Senate, where gay rights advocates and conservative groups alike are redoubling their efforts.

In a sign of how opinion in Albany has shifted on the issue, several members of the Assembly who voted against the measure in 2007 voted in favor of it on Tuesday.

There's one sort of convoluted section where they describe the strategy for overlapping districts. But the rest is clearly stated and fairly presented.

I'm always amazed by how fervently conservative groups fight same-sex marriage. Is this really such a strong, intrinsic moral issue for them? Would the fervor be the same without rabble rousers like Rush Limbaugh leading the charge?

The Times offers well-balanced coverage of the New York Assembly's passage of the gay marriage bill. Reporter Jeremy Peters spoke with not only supporters and detractorsl, but also those Democrats and Republicans who had previously voted no and changed to yes—an important element to a story that depicts not only the sole event of the bill passage, but also a political shift in opinion on gay marriage.

Well, it gives information on a topic in which more and more people are becoming interested (how's that for convoluted grammar). And it points to some of the political and moral issues involved in a legislative vote.

The US is a family oriented culture. Here are people who want to form families. What is the problem. Actually, if New York does allow gay marriage, there will be a geographic band (assuming it holds in Maine) with reasonable economies, from Maine to New Jersey where, unless I am mis-remembering and counting states with civil union alone, gay marriage can happen.
