The story seems to be based on fact, and offers a couple of different views on the Chancellor's decision.

what it shows is that for all the talk about the need for excellence in education, when financial problems arise education absorbs major cuts. This is probably no worse a way of dealing with cuts than a total hiring freeze, more school closings, ending extracurricular activities, eliminating advance placement - etc. Or have those already been done?
