Unscientific American: US Almost Last in Understanding Evolution

Americans rank next-to-last on a survey of 34 nations' acceptance of evolution as a scientific fact. (See the chart, below.) Our awareness of this scientific reality has actually gone down over the past 20 years, no doubt as a result of the so-called "intelligent design" movement and other Christian fundamentalist campaigns. I have never understood why some people try to force everyone to choose between God and Evolution. Why would anyone believe that God could not have created the Earth- AND when finished, set His planned evolution into motion? Surely no one believes that the oxygen level today is the same as it was at Creation? Or that the animals, plants, trees of today are the same as at the Beginning?? Mr. Holland put into words what I have always believed all thinking, reasoning people who are serious about trying to understand, would come to believe. I think Science is the way God allows us to get a glimse of Him, His Ways; a way of getting a peek thru the 'dark glass'. After all, Humans have evolved to discover Science and how to use it to make our lives better, as well as to use the knowledge to understand what was here before we were here to witness it in the making. It makes no sense to insist you have to "choose" God or Evolution, when it had to be God's Plan for evolution to be an ongoing process.... This article makes people think, so I think it is an Excellent article. It is also a Fact that the US is far behind in accepting and encouraging young people to take an active interest in Science. If you have Faith, Science is not a threat, but a means to better understand the Planet we were given. Science will also enable people to realize the responsibility we have in taking care of Earth and all the Lifeforms that enable it to support Life.
