Early High Shool Departures Continue to Increase, Study Says

An important article on a failing of the NYC public school system which need much closer oversight: early departures of students from the system. The article could be more in-depth, but the reporter does a good job of including many key stakeholder quotations throughout.

I hope this NYTimes reporter stays on this topic. If indeed an outside audit of the system reveals any inaccuracies in how these early departures are tracked and reported, it could threaten mayoral control of the city's education system -- a hot-button issue in NYC.

One of the most alarming trends, according to the report, is the number of ninth-grade students who are discharged.

Where are these students going? Some families move, some students switch from public to private schools, but what happens to those that don’t?
