Bush-defending opponents of investigations and prosecutions think they've discovered a trump card: the claim that Democratic leaders such as Nancy Pelosi, Jay Rockefeller and Jane Harman were briefed on the torture programs and assented to them. The core assumption here -- shared by most establishment pundits -- is that the call for criminal investigations is nothing more than a partisan-driven desire to harm Republicans and Bush officials ... Mr. Greenwald points out that investigating torture is not a partisan issue (or should not be).

As the Western world has spent decades pointing out, the hallmark of an under-developed, tyrannical society is the very same premise we have embraced: that political ... More »

Greenwald does his usual job of writing an article that the regular reader can understand, and makes the right points for some kind of investigation. Having an investigation like Reid wants would be like sweeping it under the rug. Obama should have "No" say in it. It is now up to the American people and the Justice Department.

This is a brilliant post. And it points out how political ends have become more important today then the rule of law. I'm a life long Democrat, but it infuriates me that Democrats in power such as Pelosi, who took impeachment off the table, and now Obama, who is backing away from investigating and prosecuting the Bush administration for overt criminality because of political expediancy are abusing their power and blindfolding justice.
