Industry Ignored Its Scientists on Climate

For more than a decade the Global Climate Coalition, a group representing industries with profits tied to fossil fuels, led an aggressive lobbying and public relations campaign against the idea that emissions of heat-trapping gases could lead to global warming. Full Story »

Very responsibly written story that relies on leaked documents from the Global Climate Coalition to show that even industry lobby experts said evidence about the danger of greenhouse gases was too strong to be refuted.

Revkin got lucky in obtaining a copy of the damning evidence. But the real story here is that the big, bad industry group successfully fooled the media into parroting their lies in climate change reporting. It's the 'he said, she said' journalism trap (see link).

While the Times acknowledges that the news media incorporated the Global Climate Coalition's message in order to "balance" the story, they don't necessarily take blame for helping to perpetrate the confusion about climate change. In fact, in the very next paragraph, the author incorporates a quote from a GCC representative who once again questions the science of global warming. It appears the Times has a short attention span. A typical story filled with difficult to check "facts." The reality is that the industry was correct and industry in general has dropped efforts to tell truth about global warming due to huge political pressure and the lack of courage that characterizes big business. Santer, the scientist mentioned has produced some over the top papers to try to prop up the case for global warming alarmism.

I am very conversant with the arguments concerning global warming. There is not scientific consensus concerning global warming alarmism and Obama policies are incredibly wasteful and foolish.

  • How "balanced journalism" helped the climate change deniers

(Blog Post) ... this is one case where the "media norms" may prove catastrophic, maybe not for me but for my children and eventual grandchildren. Several media critics -- but most notably ...
